Promotion Update

It’s good feeling being able to provide an update on the last blog post back in April. Hehe.

I have graduated from my Associate Engineer title to Engineer! Ultimately my responsibilities didn’t change as I have always been doing work along the lines of a full-time Engineer for the past 3+ years. The goal of acquiring the promotion is to secure the last puzzle piece on my resume. I can now update it with an accurate title and match the timeline with when I realistically stopped being an Associate Engineer which is May of 2023.

Work-hour Expectations

Say goodbye to 10 hour work days and say hello to standard 8 hour shifts. This is life changing as I have gained back a considerable amount of time throughout the week. This realistically means more time with my daughter after work.

While on the 10 hour shift I sometimes get 1 to 1 1/2 hours of dedicated playtime with my daughter. Now it’s close to 3 to 3 1/2 hours! She is quite the happy camper now and I’m loving it.

The Kicker

The company has gone under a complete restructuring after the new CEO took over and finances have tightened considerably. This also meant that the compensation from this promotion is considerably less than the previous 2 promotions with the company. On top of this, they did not consider my historical annual gross salary when deciding on the appropriate level of compensation. Unfortunately, this means I am now making less money on salary than I was as an hourly worker. Yay…

To be or not to be… a fool?

Loyalty comes at the cost of becoming a fool.

I do not wish to become a fool and I have always stated the following to my fellow peers.

“I try to get a promotion every 2 years or significant pay bump otherwise I will find another job.”

This has always been the plan and I will stick by it.

The Plan

• Continue to develop existing skills at the current company.
• Try to zero-in on what I want from my next job.
  • The job should have a good career ladder.
  • It does not have to be Engineering related.
  • I am open to business roles, or management.
• Really think if I would like to start working on a Masters in Business Administration.
  • This would really broaden my skill set and make myself more desirable as I have considerable work experience under my belt.

However, even if this is the plan. My wife and I are planning on having another child. So let’s throw that into the mix. Haha!
